“Sir, when I heard you for the first time & you said that meditation has the answer to all the questions in life, I believed you. My gullibility made me accept what you said. I absolutely had no problem in my life. But, for a couple of weeks, I am realizing that I’m losing my confidence. A weird anxiety is frustrating me. I need a way out of this. The darkness that I think has risen over the horizons of my life; I am desperately waiting for the light & energy of illumination. Please guide me, sir...” I was talking in front of the whole class filled with students. I was not afraid of the reactions of the people. I merely wanted the support of my Guru.
Sometimes in life; when books, movies, friends can no longer motivate you & you feel that you are suffering from isolation, a Guru is must. I read in a book of Robin Sharma that the word ‘Guru’ has a simple meaning. In Sanskrit, ‘Gu’ means darkness, the meaning of the word ‘ru’ is ‘dispel’. Therefore the word ‘Guru’ means the one who dispels the darkness & brings more meaning, more understanding, and more light to your life.
I was also searching for some understanding, some guidance to bring myself back on the right track. Luckily, I got many gurus who helped me in many ways. They taught me a lesson; ‘Guru’ will come in your life in any form. It is up to you to recognize him & trust him. Can God be your Guru? Yes, why not? He’s the one who created the universe. Who knows you better than him? But connecting directly with him sometimes becomes difficult. Therefore, it becomes important to go step by step. ‘Guru’ is the connection between you & God.
He can be ordinary for the world, but he is extra-ordinary for you. Because you trust him, you have faith in him. It is very essential & important to know that the world is inter-connected. In Vedas, there is a principle of ‘Adwaita’. It says that nothing in this world is different. It seems different to us because we tend to discriminate & hate the things we don’t like. Guru shows us the right path which is away from the negativities in life.
In Economics, there is a concept of basic needs or fundamental needs. For a person, to come out of the crisis of poverty, it is important to fulfil his fundamental needs. Similarly, for a person to evolve spiritually in life, Guru is a fundamental need. Guru is a friend, a mentor, a guide & a counsellor. Being with him is always a sheer pleasure. For me, Guru is an inspiration & my kind suggestion to you all is, find yours.
