He was diagnosed with testicular cancer in 1996. Cycling was his passion. And because of this cancer, doctor told him, he can never participate in any cycling race or event. At the age of 25, he could not bare this shock. Is this the end of all the efforts, all the dreams? He used to fight with his own mind, this is not the end. When the reality becomes an obstacle in imagination, it is really difficult to dream.
Doctors, relatives & friends started giving him sympathy. But he disagreed to the fact, that he is unable to do something.
After the surgery also, he started practicing daily. And the world saw a miracle after that. He won the most prestigious title of ‘Tour de France’ in 1999. He didn’t stop after that. He won it consecutively for the next five years too. Well, he’s none other than the cycling legend, Lance Armstrong. His faith, efforts & belief made him one of the finest sportsperson in the world. Later, in his book, he has mentioned that the X-factor always comes within. He has said further, ‘It was never about the bike but the struggle inside me to be the best.’
I think, in one line, he has explained the motive of the life. What is life? If anybody ever asks, I’ll recommend him this sentence. The struggle which makes us survive, the struggle which gives us strength, the struggle that unfolds the life, the struggle that gives us pain, that struggle makes life a challenge. All the masters in the world, who have excelled in their chosen walk of life, have always mentioned this thing. It is not about the bat or the tennis racket or the golf-stick. It is about the feeling inside which keeps you away from a sense of satisfaction. Which asks you for more.
The person who is satisfied by his success or status can never go beyond the point of satisfaction. The growth after the satisfaction is a kind of, Virtual growth. Which diminishes with your career. When the world says that you can’t do something & going against it, you prove that you can do it, the happiness that comes along with it can’t be expressed in words.
We are always keen about the qualities that are visible. We judge a person by his external qualities or strengths. Whenever the resources that are available to us become scarce & we don’t get the support which is anticipated, we get distracted. But the heroes don’t. They fight until they see the dawn. They imagine that they’re champions. The brightness of their faith is so powerful that it covers all the clouds of doubt & adversities.
The power never comes from steroids & other shortcuts. The willpower & courage to see the bright future is in the imagination, it is in the dream, in the struggle that creates storms. In the words of Armstrong, it is not about the bike or the opponents or the conditions, it is about the person who aspires. Start working inside.
