Selfless service

“I slept & dreamt that life was joy,
I woke up & saw that life was service,
I acted & behold that service was joy.”

Rabindranath Tagore has mentioned the importance of ‘service’ in this quote. All the religions of the world, all the sections of society emphasize the importance of service. Nature itself teaches us service. What is service? – Service is striving constantly for the wellness of others. But what is so special about it? Thousands of people work for the wellness of others. In fact, everybody works for the wellness of others. Driver drives bus for the passengers, doctors serve their patients, engineers serve the people with technology, Businessmen serve their customers & employees; true, isn’t it?
Then why are they so unhappy? If Tagore says that service brings joy, everybody should be happy.

Is our service faulty? If yes, then we do have chance to improve. If no, what is it?
The answer is pretty simple. We know it for thousands of years. The problem is, it is very thrilling & joyous when we read it or listen about it. But, we can’t implement it; because it is too damn hard to follow. Yes, the answer is ‘self-less service’.

Why self-less service? – When we do some service, our brain asks us for either recognition or money. In any case, we find it too hard to look beyond our own profit. While loving also, we expect the other person to love us, to care for us. Our every action is generated & motivated due to our personal interest. While doing social work or charity also, we are greedy for recognition. We want somebody to say, ‘look, he truly knows what social responsibility is.’
Even when we avoid recognition we like to hear people saying, he is purposefully staying away from recognition.

Selfless service makes you forget yourself. It shows you that you are a part of this vast nature that has to serve without any expectation.
I read a very beautiful quote yesterday, ‘If you take out the poisonous tooth of a snake, you can play with the snake every day. Because he becomes threat less. In the same way, Service is not dangerous or life taking, it is the expectation in the service which takes your breath away.’

You have to do your work or service persistently, without waiting for the fruit of expectation. Selfless service is the key to everlasting joy. Today, where-ever I see, I find people sad, filled with negativity. Their problem is they try to mould the world as they are. The solution is selfless service, as it moulds the world for you in space that has no limits of shape.

Douglas Adams says, ‘To give real service you must add something that can’t be measured or bought with money, and that is sincerity & integrity.’
I will like to conclude this topic with a great quote by Mahatma Gandhi.
“The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.” Bless you! :)

  1. I love the quotes you've shared in this article.

Selfless service really brings joy. However, like you said, recognition and money come in the way, all the time.

Although not the most common phenomenon in today's world, I've seen people help others and I really appreciated and admire it. But it really taints the purpose when a big deal and an issue are made of it.

Anyways, I hope that someday we can immerse ourselves so much in helping others selflessly that we lose ourselves in it without even realizing it.

    Another wonderful article!
