The Essence & Mc'donaldization

Indian society has now developed the western concept of ‘week-ends’. Nuclear families have set their mark everywhere in the country. And now Joint families are ‘endangered species’. We are so ashamed of Indian outfits that we have made a special provision of ‘Cultural day’ to celebrate our cultural heritage.

Do we need any ‘Western day’ to wear jeans, tops, jackets & skirts? No. Because they are now a part of our regular lives. We eat pizzas, burgers, sandwiches every day. But, we hesitate to eat rice. Every city is trying to be like Manhattan today. But nobody has the vision to understand the environmental & social problems which are faced today by Manhattan itself.
Our thoughts have become secondary, our actions have become secondary, and our lives have become secondary. Unfortunately, we are today a secondary nation. We are living on ‘Borrowed development.’

I don’t want to yell & shout from the roofs about the deterioration of the culture. But I get worried when I see the high level of ignorance in the society today. The false interpretation of the concept of ‘science’ & ‘religion’ which lead to the fall of morality, truth in the world before a couple of decades, is taking its toll on India now.  And the eagle’s eye view of the situation is really hazardous.

The point here to make is, we have lost our cultural innocence. We have lost the beauty & simplicity of our festivals, our rituals & our lives. We have lost our peaceful cities & beautiful villages. We have lost our identity as ‘Indians’.
There is a reason why India survived the British & Muslim invasions. It was our strong faith in the culture & the nation that helped us. That little factor saved our oldest civilization from the invaders. Today, we have become the invaders of our country. And this battle is going to be the toughest one. I’m certain about the victory of culture, but worried about the backlash that it will bring.

We need to learn, how to respect our culture peacefully & politely. Thousands of grapes are passed to fill one jar with the finest wine. And the grape skin & pulp is tossed to the birds. Similarly, the things which didn’t work out in our culture have been removed many years ago. What is left with us is pure knowledge that has been retrieved from the experiences of thousands of years.
And what we are doing is pouring our wine in the ocean & borrowing somebody else’s wine.
The others are accepting our knowledge, tossing their pulp to us.

We have to love ourselves. We have to love our culture; what are we without it?
It is said that those who forget or ignore their mistakes in the history are condemned to repeat them. Building a nation is the most difficult thing to do, but if done properly; its blossom can linger for thousands of years. Isn’t it our responsibility to give this golden heritage to the next generations? :)
